Plastic a new source of chemical pollution in the ocean

In a new study the researchers found that plastic breaks down at cooler temperatures than expected, and within a year of the trash hitting the water. The Japan-based team collected samples in waters from the U.S., Europe, India and Japan. All the water samples were found to contain derivatives of polystyrene, a common plastic used in disposable cutlery, Styrofoam, and DVD cases.

The scientists later simulated the decomposition of polystyrene in the sea and found that it degraded at temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). The pollutants are likely to be more concentrated in areas heavily littered with plastic debris, such as ocean vortices, which occur where currents meet. Continue Reading →

Plastic bags & packaging films may lead to following environmental and health hazards;

  • Make land in-fertile due to impervious nature;
  • Choke the open drains;
  • On ingestion by cattles it may lead death; and
  • Coloured recycled bags on dumping may leach & contaminate
    soil & underground water.

Plastics create significant environmental and economic burdens. Polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene is largely used in the manufacture of plastics. These materials have molecular weight ranging from several thousands to 1,50,000. Excessive molecular size seems to be mainly responsible for the resistance of these chemicals to biodegradation and their persistence in soil environment for a long time. Continue Reading →
